The vacuum cleaning company Dyson is aiming to become a new powerhouse in the car-making world. With so much experience building electrical motors to drive vacuums over our carpets in our homes, Dyson believes it has what it takes to make an electric car.

The vacuum cleaning company has spent $2.7 billion creating an automotive factory in the United Kingdom, with a team of 500 people looking to make history. The company applied for patents last year, and the details have finally been released.

Not Adapting From What We Have

Dyson claims its plans for a new vehicle will be starting from scratch and not adapting an existing shape from a combustion engine vehicle. They are looking to transform vehicles as we know them and will be bringing a large automobile to the roads in 2021.

One of the first differences will be the wheelbase, which is due to be 16 inches longer than a regular SUV. This is to make more room for the passengers onboard. Other changes from typical vehicles will be the abnormally large wheels and steeply sloped windshield.

The wheels are going to be massive and are expected to reach up to 55% of the vehicle’s overall height. These wheels will also be narrow to minimize the amount of rubber that touches the ground, which is meant to increase the battery life of the engine.

The vehicle will also sit higher than regular SUVs, because the company expects its underside to be completely flat, like a battery. That means they can worry less about aerodynamics than other cars. The windshield is expected to be tilted to a 25 or 30-degree angle, which will mean the driver’s seat will be reclined.

Dyson’s new vehicle is aiming to throw car design as we know it out the window. Whether it will be a success or not is up for debate, but there’s nothing wrong with some diversity and healthy competition.
