Fairphone 3 is a smartphone made by a Dutch company. It is a device that is promised to be easily repairable, and so far, it has proved to be true. iFixit put it to the test by having repair experts take on the challenge, and in the end, awarded the phone the best possible score, a 10 out of 10 on their scale for repairability. The previous Fairphone 2, which was released in 2015, also had the same score.
The phone runs Android 9, and it has seven primary modules. These modules can be easily replaced for repair parts that are supplied by the company. They focus on using responsibly sourced and conflict-free materials to have long-lasting and sustainable devices.
Easy-to-Repair Device
As the largest model to date, the Fairphone 3 has specs totaling 158 x 71.9 x 9.89mm. Based on the teardown iFixit did, the smartphone’s back can be removed without the use of any tools. The battery can be lifted using a notch at the base of the phone. A screwdriver comes standard with each device, and it can be used to separate the display from the frame.
Once you get inside, you have the top and bottom module, speaker module, and the camera module. All these parts can be switched with replacement parts. According to iFixit, the user guides and OEM that were available on the company’s site were also commendable.
Availability of the Fairphone
At the moment, the company only ships to European countries. However, they are planning to expand to a larger selection of countries outside of Europe. Eventually, they are looking to enter the U.S. market, but it will not happen shortly.
